Languages

In NSW primary schools, the study of a language is optional.

Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.

Languages (Auslan) at Les Powell School

In the Languages Key Learning Area, we focus on developing communication skills through the Australian Sign Language (Auslan) syllabus. For students in the Early Stage 1 (ES1) curriculum, we introduce Auslan in a fun and engaging way, using stories, songs, and interactive activities to help your child learn basic signs and understand simple concepts. This approach allows students to connect with their peers and express themselves in a visual and meaningful manner.

As your child progresses into Years 7-12, we incorporate Key Word Sign into our teaching. Key Word Sign uses simplified signs alongside spoken language to enhance understanding and communication for students who may have varying levels of ability. This method supports your child's ability to express their needs, thoughts, and feelings in everyday situations, promoting confidence in their communication skills.

Throughout the curriculum, we create a supportive environment where your child can practice Auslan and Key Word Sign with their peers and teachers. Our goal is to empower your child to communicate effectively and build meaningful relationships, fostering an appreciation for diversity in communication and culture.

By learning Auslan and using Key Word Sign, your child not only develops essential language skills but also gains a deeper understanding of inclusion and community, preparing them for a more connected and engaged life.
