The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.Â
By studying mathematics, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and their use within the classroom and beyond.
The K-6 Mathematics Syllabus includes five key strands: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability, Working Mathematically, and Problem-Solving. These strands emphasise understanding mathematical concepts, applying skills in real-world contexts, and developing critical thinking through exploration, reasoning, and communication within mathematics.
The 7-12 Mathematics Life Skills Syllabus focuses on practical mathematics skills applicable to everyday life. It encompasses key areas such as Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. The syllabus aims to enhance students’ confidence, problem-solving abilities, and functional skills for personal and community engagement in various contexts.
Mathematics at Les Powell School
Mathematics education is designed to be practical and relevant to your child's daily life. In the modified K-6 curriculum, we introduce foundational concepts like counting and shapes through fun, hands-on activities. For students in Years 7-12, the Life Skills syllabus focuses on real-world applications, such as managing money, telling time, and understanding measurements. Our goal is to help your child develop the numeracy skills necessary for daily living, enabling them to make informed choices and gain independence in everyday situations.
